New PR Classes OfferedNew Mexico Tech is offering a Physical Recreation class in triathlon, led by SSR's Laura Wilcox. Class is meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6AM at the Tech pool. Also, if you want to improve your bike handling skills, Brad Cromey is offering a class in extreme cycling. Socorro Fat Tire Fiesta Coming Up SoonWhether you're into racing, easy rides, or epic tours, the Socorro Fat Tire Fiesta offers the best opportunity to ride Socorro County. The Quebradas races on Saturday, September 21st, will have the region's best cross-country riders vying for at least $500 in cash and prizes. Fat Tire Fiesta rides on both Saturday and Sunday range from a tour of the Bosque del Apache, to a Strawberry Peak ride, a San Mateo Crest ride, and many more. Check out the web site and sign up now! Fat Tire Fiesta Committee Meeting TonightA committee meeting for the Socorro Fat Tire Fiesta will be held on Wednesday, August 28th, at 6PM. The location is at Trex Enterprises, 300 California SE, #2. That's the building next to the Texaco station just south of Manzaneras. All volunteers and other interested individuals are encouraged to attend. SSR Athletes Dominate Los Alamos TriathlonStriders And Riders members Christian Krueger and Terry Moore bested a field of 279 triathletes at the Los Alamos Triathlon, held on August 17th. The Los Alamos Triathlon, the oldest continuously held triathlon in the world, starts with a 20K bike leg, followed by a 400-meter swim, and finishes with a 5K run, all at the 7700' elevation of Los Alamos. Krueger was 4th after the first leg, took the lead during the swim, and held on for the overall victory with a time of 0:58:24. Moore also took the women's lead during the swim, and finished first among the women with a time of 1:10:00. Fellow SSR member Laura Jean Wilcox was the second female finisher, just behind Moore with a time of 1:10:51. Other members racing included David Yin (1:06:12, 1st 20-24) and Robert Abernathy (1:29:16). Fat Tire Fiesta Ride Leaders NeededFat Tire Fiesta still need a couple of ride leaders. If you're willing to take a little responsibility for your ride, it's a good way to get free entry. Everything's been filled except for the Lemitar Mission tour and the Piro Indian Ruins tour. We also need assistant ride leaders for the San Acacia Rock Art tour and the Strawberry Peak tour. If you can help, contact Mark Bottjer. September Striders And Riders Meeting AnnouncedWe'll have a regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd, at 7PM at the Brew Pub. Currently on the agenda are triathlon recap and suggestions, winter running handicap series, and the Fat Tire Fiesta. Weekend EventsRacing events this weekend include the F1 Triathlon in Roswell on Saturday, with a unique 800-meter swim, 14-K bike, 4-K run, 14-K bike, 4-K run (not a typo) draft-legal format. Closer to home, on Sunday there's the Duke City Marathon in Albuquerque, with 5K and 1/2-marathon races in addition to the marathon. |
