The surface motions were monitored by theodolite from several stations
along the side of the glacier. This is one such station with the pass
to the Hoh glacier in the background. The umbrella kept the direct
sun off the tripod legs whose length is a bit temperature sensitive.
I gained an appreciation for how difficult it is to measure angles
to 10 arcseconds. Later in my career, I would be measureing angles
to 10s of microarcseconds with VLBI with very different techniques.
