Revised stelae coordinates from Infiniverse Update v1
In Infiniverse Update v1 WEG published latitude
and longitude values of the stelae for all the major realms (Akashan reality
trees were also plotted but I never bothered to check them since they
have fewer restrictions on how they can be placed.) However, when
I went to plot out these coordinates on my own maps, I discovered a large
number of mistakes (such as two Living Land stelae way out in the Atlantic
Ocean and two Orrorshan stelae off in Australia nowhere near the rest of
the realm) and on top of that, many stelae were located more than 300 miles
apart, the supposed maximum seperation possible.
Some of the distance errors are probably just scale
errors; I was using an atlas while WEG plotted everything on a wall map,
so there was probably a lot more guesswork on their part in estimating the
coordinates of the stelae. It's also possible that there were some
problems due to translating between different map projections, what looked
good on one map may have been incorrect on a different type.
In my usual anal-retentive fashion, I couldn't leave
well enough alone and had to plot out the correct latitudes and longitudes
for myself. I used some of the coordinates from Infiniverse Update v1
as starting points and tried to place the stelae so that my maps looked
as much like the sourcebook and Update maps as possible while still
obeying the rules for how stelae link up (primarily the 300 mile limit.)
These numbers were long ago posted to the Torg mailing list but
enough people have asked for them recently I finally took it off the back
burner and churned out these webpages.
For comparison purposes, I am listing both the original
coordinates from Infinverse Update v1 and my own coordinates. My
coordinates here are not the same ones posted to the mailing list
years ago; in putting together these pages I have revised some coordinates
in order to better fit the published maps than I had done originally (I discovered
to my dismay that in several cases I rounded off in the wrong direction,
resulting in incorrect maps when the original points were plotted out.)
I have not yet had time to double-check the seperation distances of
these new coordinates so it's possible that some of them are now too far
apart. If they are, I think the error should be no more than half a degree
so adjustments should be easy enough to make.
